A Hidden Oasis Just Outside Barnstaple
Tucked away in a secluded valley only four miles from Barnstaple, Marwood Hill Gardens is a privately-owned, 20-acre haven for plant lovers, walkers, and anyone seeking peace among nature. Created by the late Dr. Jimmy Smart in the 1950s, the gardens have matured into a rich, layered landscape where ornamental lakes, rare plant collections, and quiet woodland paths come together in harmony.
Set within the rolling countryside of North Devon, Marwood is more than a garden—it’s a sensory experience that changes with every season. Whether you’re visiting for spring magnolias, midsummer astilbes, or autumn reflections on the lakes, there’s always something stirring beneath the trees.
Why Visit Marwood Hill Gardens?
Marwood offers a unique mix of formal planting, wilder woodlands, and waterside scenery. It’s an ideal destination for half-day visits, garden tours, or a relaxing lunch among the flowers.
A Seasonal Garden Experience
Spring bursts into life with carpets of snowdrops and bold camellias, while azaleas and magnolias add height and drama. In early summer, iris collections draw in enthusiasts from across the UK, especially the elegant Japanese Iris ensata that thrive along the lakes.
By mid-July, the astilbe display—a National Collection—is at its peak. It’s one of the finest in the country, a frothy, pink-toned spectacle you won’t see in typical garden centres. As autumn arrives, the garden takes on a more reflective tone. Rich foliage colours frame the lakes, and low sunlight bathes the sculpture-strewn lawns in gold.
Even in late season, the garden feels alive with movement—rustling leaves, birdsong, and the occasional glimpse of a kingfisher skimming the water.

Rare and diverse displays of Astilbe, Camelia, Iris ensata, Tulbaghia, and much more.

Well-behaved dogs on leads are welcome across most of the garden.

Tea Room and Plant Centre: Make a Day of It
No visit is complete without a stop at the award-winning Garden Tea Room. Overlooking the upper lake, the terrace is a peaceful spot for Devon cream teas, fresh salads, and hearty homemade soups. Indoors or out, it’s the kind of place where people linger long after lunch.
The plant nursery, located near the entrance, offers a curated selection of herbaceous perennials, shrubs, and unusual specimens. Many are grown from seed or division on-site, meaning you can recreate a little piece of Marwood at home.
