A classic trial, by definition, is a test focusing on the distance covered. Tracing back to the early 1900s, the inception of machinery and the MCC, riders and drivers embarked on hundreds of miles to demonstrate not only the feasibility of their vehicles but also the spirit of competition among their peers.

Today, the passion for using cars and bikes in similar trials remains strong, as evidenced by the numerous participants in the Club’s three primary events. Diverse trials now cater to two, three, and four-wheelers, with the term ‘classic’ signifying long-distance events. The connection to the past remains, as modern technology makes navigation easier, but the essence of classic trials lies in mastering the art of navigating through minor roads.

Challenges that once lay on unsurfaced roads now reside in deep valleys and woodlands, tackled only by enthusiastic club members striving to prove their mettle. The MCC stands out for pitting competitors against organizer-set challenges instead of one another, fostering a camaraderie often missing in other disciplines. Tales of assistance and goodwill among competitors are plentiful.

Success in a classic trial hinges on reliability: machinery, drivers, passengers, and route-finding must be second nature. Penalties await those who arrive too early or late, fail to complete the route within the designated time, or make mistakes in ‘Observed Sections’ or ‘Special Tests.’

Though events can be gruelling endurance tests, covering around 400 miles through hours of darkness, the Club recognizes the hardships, providing rest halts and fueling points. The MCC, now 120 years old, continues to captivate with its timeless appeal, be it early primroses in the West Country at Easter or the scent of mud on hot exhausts.

Each year, we organize three main trials: The Edinburgh Trial, The Exeter Trial, and The Land’s End Trial.

If you relish adventure, the unique UK landscape, and the chance to test your skills against Club-set challenges, consider joining one of our events. We welcome those seeking new challenges for themselves and their machines.
