Westward Ho! — Sand, Surf and Big-Sky Coast
A lively seaside village shaped by long beaches, Atlantic waves and open horizons.
Westward Ho! grew out of the Victorian love of sea air and open horizons, and that heritage still shows along its broad promenade. The village sits behind one of North Devon’s longest sandy beaches — a huge sweep of shoreline that feels different at every tide. Low water reveals firm, wide sand perfect for walking, kite-flying or simply wandering out towards the surf zone; high tide brings the waves right up to the seawall with an unmistakable Atlantic energy.
Westward Ho! A Hub for Surfing and Seaside Activity
It’s well known for surf culture, with hire shops and local instructors lining the main stretch. Beginners start in the softer white-water close to shore, while more confident surfers head a little further along for cleaner breaks. Families gravitate to the rockpools and gentler sections of the beach, where the mix of sand, stones and shallow channels keeps children busy for hours.
Nature and Open Space on Northam Burrows
Just beyond the village edge lies Northam Burrows Country Park — saltmarsh, dunes and rough grazing land that opens into big skies and long views across the bay. It’s a quieter contrast to the main beach, and a favourite with dog walkers and anyone wanting a bracing loop without straying far from the car.
Easygoing Seaside Pace
Altogether, Westward Ho! blends old seaside character with easy, modern holiday pace — a natural stop for anyone exploring the western side of the North Devon coast.
