Lynton Town Hall

Lee Road, Lynton, Devon. EX35 6BS | 01598 752 384 | Website

Lynton’s historic Town Hall is a strange mixture of mock-Gothic, neo-Tudor and art nouveau design.

The Town Hall, located on Lee Road, Lynton, Devon, England, is a Grade II listed, municipal building with a rich history and significant architectural interest.

It was gifted by prominent publisher and politician, Sir George Newnes, and opened its doors on August 15, 1900. Its design, attributed to Read and Macdonald, is largely Tudor Revival style with five bays on the main frontage and intricately decorative black timbers on the first floor. Internally, the council chamber and the main hall served as the principal rooms.

A bust of Sir George Newnes, sculpted by Gilbert Bayes, was unveiled within the town hall in 1902. The building also features a war memorial, erected in 1920, to commemorate local servicemen who died in World War I. In the 2000s, another bust of Newnes was installed, adding to the hall’s distinct charm. Despite being formerly a local seat of government, it ceased such functions when the North Devon Council was established in 1974.

The Lynton Town Hall continues to be a symbol of civic pride and historical legacy in North Devon.
