Lynton Cinema: A Story of Passion and Community in North Devon
Tucked along Lee Road in the heart of Lynton, North Devon, sits one of Britain’s most intimate and historic cinemas. With just 68 seats and full digital surround sound, Lynton Cinema offers a rare experience: modern films shown in a building steeped in local history and care.
Early Steps: From Mobile Screens to Seaside Cinema
Bill Pryor’s journey with cinema began in 1976 when he started managing mobile film units in Kent, bringing movies to schools and communities. After gaining experience at a drive-in cinema and various traditional cinemas, his passion for film and small communities led him westward. In 1983, Bill and his wife Sue took over the Majestic Cinema in Ilfracombe, Devon.
A decade later, when the local community in Lynton voiced their desire for a dedicated cinema, Bill and Sue listened. Fundraising efforts from the community combined with private support laid the foundations for a project close to Bill’s heart.
Building Lynton Cinema: A Dream Realised
In 1999, the Pryors acquired the former Methodist Chapel on Lee Road. After meticulous renovations, the chapel opened its doors as Lynton Cinema in June 2001. Purpose-built seating, a sloping floor for perfect views, and the latest projection technology ensured every visitor enjoyed a premium film experience.
Lynton Cinema is proud to be a fully independent cinema, offering visitors and residents the latest film releases without the need to travel to larger towns. It’s a true reflection of Lynton and Lynmouth’s community spirit and Bill’s dedication to creating a welcoming space.
A Legacy Continued: Family and Community Ties
Today, Lynton Cinema remains a family-run business with Bill and Sue’s daughter Kate managing the cinema alongside a small, passionate team. Every aspect, from the warm welcome at the entrance to the careful selection of films, reflects the original spirit that built the cinema.
Visitors to Lynton and Lynmouth can enjoy a film screening as part of their exploration of North Devon and Exmoor National Park. Whether seeking shelter from a coastal rain shower or unwinding after a day on the moor, Lynton Cinema offers comfort, history, and a touch of magic.
Practical Information
Lynton Cinema screens films daily. Tickets can be booked online or purchased at the door, but advance booking is recommended during peak seasons.
