A Natural Wonder on Exmoor’s Coast
Just west of Lynton in North Devon lies the Valley of Rocks — a dramatic coastal valley carved through ancient geology and shaped by time. This unique landscape, part of Exmoor National Park, offers visitors a rare mix of coastal cliffs, rugged rock towers, and wild roaming goats.
What Makes the Valley of Rocks Special?
The Valley of Rocks is a dry valley, meaning there’s no river flowing through it today. But long ago, water shaped its dramatic formations. Now, it’s one of the most recognisable landmarks in the South West, known for its unusual rock outcrops and sweeping sea views.
You’ll find jagged peaks like Castle Rock and Devil’s Cheesewring — perfect spots for photos or simply taking in the view. On clear days, the coast of Wales can even be seen across the Bristol Channel.
A Favourite for Walkers, Wildlife Lovers, and Families
There are several walking trails through the valley, including a flat path from Lynton that runs alongside the cliff edge — easy to follow and offering jaw-dropping views throughout. The valley is home to a herd of feral goats, often seen leaping across steep rocks, along with kestrels, buzzards, and seasonal wildflowers.
The circular route from Lynton is suitable for most fitness levels and ideal for a short afternoon walk or a longer hike connecting to the South West Coast Path.
History and Culture in the Rocks
The Valley of Rocks has inspired poets, artists, and writers for centuries — most notably Romantic author Samuel Taylor Coleridge and his friend William Wordsworth, who walked through the area in 1797. Its otherworldly landscape has led to appearances in literature and paintings throughout the 19th and 20th centuries.
