Top tips for Bringing your dog to Lynton & Lynmouth?
Jacquie Dove from the fantastic Lyn Valley Dog House in Lynton’s Old Town has shared some of her top tips when bringing your pooch to Lynton & Lynmouth …
Here in the Lyn Valley and in the surrounding area, we have some of the best dog walks in the country.
You can choose to tramp across the open moors, explore the Valley of Rocks, walk through the local woodlands beside the Lyn rivers or play on the beaches. Wherever you want to exercise your dog there are a few tips you can bear in mind to ensure safe and enjoyable walks for both you and your dog.
Tips for dog walking in the Lyn Valley:
Wildlife.
We are lucky to be surrounded by a veritable wealth of animal life here, much of which will be unfamiliar to your dog. From majestic stags, sheep, and Exmoor ponies on the moor to goats in the Valley of Rocks, as well as otters and a wealth of birdlife on the rivers. Please consider keeping your dog on a lead in areas with other animals, particularly if they are prone to chasing.Heat.
Take plenty of water with you for both yourselves and your dogs. On very sunny days packing a tea towel, which can be soaked from your water bottle or a nearby stream may provide some welcome relief to a hot dog. Also consider canine sunscreen if your dog is of pale complexion, especially on their ears. Dogs can be prone to skin cancer and need protection. Remember, if you are burning in the sun, your dog will be too.Beaches.
While Lynton and Lynmouth’s beaches are dog friendly all year round, others in the area are closed to dogs from Easter until October. Please double-check before walking your dogs on beaches further afield. Also, if your dog likes to swim, ensure that you keep an eye on them at all times as currents can be strong in certain tides.Contact Details.
Ensure that your dog’s microchip and collar tags are up to date. Your dog’s recall may not be the same as it is at home with all the new and exciting experiences. If you know your dog is prone to wander you could also consider a GPS tracker. Also, some local B&Bs and holiday accommodation may have dog tags showing your local accommodation details. And of course. Remember to bring your poo bags! You can put these in any dog bins or general waste bins you see along your walks.
Please leave no trace.
