They are separated by a steep cliff face which can be traversed by foot via the Lynton & Lynmouth Cliff Railway or on foot via the ‘Zig Zag Path’ or Poets Walk. If you don’t want to walk, there is also an option to drive up Lynmouth Hill and park at the top of it before descending into Lynton.

The Zig Zag Path is a tarmac path that crosses over the tracks of the Lynton & Lynmouth Cliff Railway via bridges. It starts on North Walk in Lynton and finishes near the Exmoor National Park Centre. It offers lovely views but is quite steep and not suitable for everyone.

The Lynton & Lynmouth Cliff Railway is a fun and unique way to travel between Lynton and Lynmouth. It offers a scenic ride with beautiful views along the way.
The railway was built in 1890 by Sir George Newnes, who wanted to provide an easy way for people to get from one side of the valley to another without having to walk over such steep terrain. The cable car system has been used as inspiration for other similar projects around the world since then!
Drive via Lynmouth Hill
Lynmouth Hill, on the B3234, is a climb towards Lynmouth. It is approx. 0.7km long and bridges 133 vertical meters with an average gradient of 20%, it is a challenging drive. We do not advise walking up or down this hill, and it would be best to avoid this road if you have a long/heavy vehicle, caravan or motorhome – opt for the A39 in these instances.

If you don’t want to walk or drive, taxis are a convenient and affordable way to travel between Lynton and Lynmouth. They offer a comfortable ride for just a few pounds.
