Discover the Magic of Watersmeet

Just a short riverside walk from the twin villages of Lynton and Lynmouth lies one of Exmoor’s most enchanting locations — Watersmeet. Nestled in a deep, wooded gorge where the East Lyn River meets Hoar Oak Water, Watersmeet is where nature, tranquillity, and timeless beauty converge.

A Walk to Remember

The most popular way to reach Watersmeet is by foot — and what a walk it is. Setting off from Lynmouth, the riverside path gently winds through ancient woodland, past tumbling waterfalls, moss-covered rocks, and birdsong-filled canopies. It’s around 2 miles each way, making it ideal for families, couples, and solo explorers alike.

Along the way, keep an eye out for wild red deer, herons, and dippers darting across the river — the East Lyn Valley is a haven for wildlife lovers and photographers.

Watersmeet House: Cream Teas & Riverside Views

At the heart of the valley sits Watersmeet House, a 19th-century fishing lodge now lovingly managed by the National Trust. Here, you can pause for a traditional Devon cream tea, locally sourced snacks, or a well-earned cup of tea in the riverside garden. It’s a place where time seems to slow down.

The tea garden opens seasonally, usually from spring through autumn, and offers the perfect reward after your walk.

Did you know?

The word “Watersmeet” literally refers to the meeting of rivers — and here, it couldn’t be more poetic.
