Lynton & Lynmouth: Rocks & Rivers Walking Itinerary
Along this stretch of Exmoor National Park, the coast is steep and dramatic, with some of England’s tallest sea cliffs. Inland, wooded hills and deep river valleys shape the landscape.
Lynton and Lynmouth sit where famous trails like the South West Coast Path, Two Moors Way, and Coleridge Way meet. This two-day walking itinerary blends coastal scenery with green valleys. The walks are relatively gentle but do include some steep sections.
Day 1: Coast and Cliffs
Explore the Valley of Rocks
Start the Journey
Begin from Lynton following North Walk, or from Lynmouth by climbing the ‘zig-zag’ path to North Walk. This section of the South West Coast Path showcases some of Exmoor’s most impressive cliffs.
Discover the Valley of Rocks
Wander through the Valley of Rocks, an iconic Exmoor landmark filled with towering rock formations and wild goats.
Optional Challenge: Carefully climb Castle Rock for even wider views.
Refreshments: A seasonal café near the cricket pitch offers snacks and drinks.
Public Facilities
Toilets are available just beyond the cricket pitch, along the road.
Climb Hollerday Hill
After the cricket pitch, take the left path up Hollerday Hill. A narrow goat track leads up through open heathland with views back over the valley.
Visit the Iron Age Fort Site
At the top of Hollerday Hill, explore the old fort site with wide views across the Bristol Channel and Exmoor’s coastline.
Meander through the Woods
As you descend back into Lynton, spend some time wandering the woodland trails of Hollerday Hill.
Return to Lynton
Descend towards the ruins of Hollerday House and back into Lynton.
Day 2: Rivers and Woodland
Follow the East Lyn River
Start Along the River
From Lyndale Bridge in Lynmouth, follow the path alongside the East Lyn River into a steep, wooded gorge.
Rest a while at Watersmeet House
Pause at Watersmeet, a historic fishing lodge now run by the National Trust.
Optional Extension: Use Watersmeet as a starting point for longer Exmoor walking routes.
Cross the River
After refreshments, cross the bridge and walk back along the opposite riverbank, which feels more remote and peaceful.
Explore Myrtleberry Cleave
Pass through ancient oak woodland, especially beautiful when bluebells bloom in spring.
Return to Lynmouth
Retrace your steps or extend the walk by looping via Rockford and Countisbury for sweeping coastal views.
Extend Your Stay
Lynton and Lynmouth offer welcoming places to stay, from guesthouses to hotels. Staying overnight gives you more time to enjoy Exmoor’s trails at a relaxed pace.
