Walk the Rivers of Watersmeet from Lynmouth
Discover a riverside journey through ancient woodlands and rocky gorges, starting from the coastal village of Lynmouth and ending with tea at historic Watersmeet House.
Walk Along the East Lyn River
From Lynmouth harbour, join the path tracing the East Lyn River. The trail winds through a deep, wooded valley filled with oak, ash, and birch trees. The river’s rushing sound guides you under natural canopies where trout and otters thrive. After about two miles, you’ll arrive at Watersmeet House.
Once a fishing lodge, Watersmeet House now serves as a National Trust tea room. Sit by the river and enjoy local cream teas, scones, and sandwiches before exploring further trails into Exmoor.
Wildlife and Walking Beyond
This stretch of Exmoor is rich in wildlife. Watch for herons fishing in the shallows, red deer moving through the trees, and dippers darting across the river. Spring and early summer bring carpets of wildflowers to the riverbanks.
From Watersmeet, trails lead towards Countisbury Hill for sweeping coastal views or deeper into the quiet valleys alongside Hoar Oak Water.
